Launching Tomorrow: All-New BMW 5 Series

BMW India is all set to launch the all-new 5 Series in the country tomorrow. The new executive sedan made its global debut in October 2016 and it has taken over eight months for the Munich-based carmaker to bring it to India. Into its seventh generation, the new BMW 5 Series is expected to be offered with three engine options in India - 520d, 530i and 530d.

The entry level variant is likely to wear the 520d tag at the rear and under the hood will be a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 190PS/400Nm. Next in line, in all probability, will be the only petrol engine that will be on offer. The 530i will be powered by the same engine that does duty in the BMW 330i GT. The engine is tuned to generate 252PS of power and 350Nm of torque. Topping the range is likely to be a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder diesel engine which will pump out 265PS/620Nm. BMW is expected to offer all these engines with its 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission as standard.

As far as looks are concerned, the new 5 Series looks like a shrunken 7 Series. On the face of it, BMW says that it has been engineered to deliver better overall performance, increased efficiency and give all its rivals a run for their money. The feature list on the new car will include four-zone climate control, electric seats with massage functions and new-gen iDrive system. On the outside, the 5 Series will boast adaptive dampers, LED headlamps with optional adaptive LED lights and an anti-dazzle high-beam tech that extends the viewing range up to half a kilometre.

Launching Tomorrow: All-New BMW 5 Series

We expect BMW India to put a starting price of Rs 55 lakh for the new 5 Series. If it does, the new sedan will undercut the recently launched Mercedes-Benz E 220 d and will come in close proximity to the Volvo S90’s price of Rs 54.5 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It will also compete with the Audi A6 and the Jaguar XF, both of which have their own pluses to play with.
